Say hello to Dumbo, the new sister to The Elephant restaurant, famous for clean, fresh, vegetarian fare.
Split over two levels, there’s a modern vibe, with a personal touch every step of the way. Downstairs, will be casual, kinda all day brunch food that you’re more likely to eat with your hands (under construction on my visit). Upstairs, there’s a breezy relaxed elegance. More knife and fork like.
A wood fired oven is center stage.
I perched at the bench, open to the view, enjoying cool relief from the heat of Ubud. There’s a variety of table settings to cater for sharing, couples, and groups. I’m in the perfect spot for my solo status.
I love grazing on small plates of food so I ordered the arancini alla dumbo – crunchy risotto balls with chilli jam & aioli, along with a chilled glass of white. Artfully yet simply presented, delicious, and that chilli jam… I nearly asked for a jar to take home.
It feels like every element has a story, from the reclaimed wood walls to the found objects placed amongst an array of plants. I found myself wandering around intrigued by every detail.
I can drop into Dumbo on my way home from Ubud, making it easy to work through my wish list ..….
I’m usually not one for cocktails, but a ginger coriander martini is too intriguing not to try.
I’m going for the Giallo pizza – roasted pumpkin, zucchini flowers, nasturtium, pine nuts, dried chilli. I will do as suggested and ‘pimp it’ with bocconcini and parmesan.
For a pasta fix it’s the pumpkin ravioli with roast tomato cream sauce, ricotta & basil.
For a sweet treat, it has to be torta al limone – lemon curd and crust, with a coffee.
What I loved most….. the friendly happy vibe.
In their uber cool outfits, the staff stand out with their awesome, genuinely friendly attitude. Talking with the owner Johnathon, it’s clear there’s a heartfelt ethos. From working with local farmers for fresh produce to considering the eco impact, there is a thoughtfulness.
There is WiFi, but this is a place that deserves your undivided attention. Connect to your friends, the place, the staff and appreciate every mouthful of the delicious food on your plate.
Hit the website for opening hours. The wood oven fires up late afternoon, so it’s Pizza after 4pm.
I’m so happy to say Dumbo is #refillfriendly.
It’s not on the menu, so ask for a refill before you head back into the Ubud heat. For a small fee you get filtered fresh water for your trip home.
