Coconuts. Rice Sacks. Bamboo Stretcher. Rice fields. Jungle. We’re good to go.
Its 2008. My first Bali Bootcamp Retreat kicks off.
As we pass by rice fields the farmers are bemused by our stretchers loaded up with coconuts. We work up a sweat lifting rice sacks filled with volcanic sand. Just when we think we’re done with the rice sacks we load them into our backpacks for a trek through jungle ravines.
Little did I know that this would be the start of 10+ years of fitness retreats at my home in a small Bali village. Later we would build a ‘bamboo gym’ and an open sided bamboo platform for yoga/pilates/stretching, but nothing really changed, the coconuts and rice sacks were used every retreat.
We kept it simple. It was about getting back to basics, reminding us that getting fit can be done anywhere and be fun. There were a lot of laughs amongst the sweat, the treks and the burpees.
Fast forward to today and we’re doing the same around the world. Jo Sharp is the master of creating energising fusion sessions, in the most unusual and inspiring places on our trips.
Working out where to set up the “Sharp Moves Studio” for the day leads to some interesting ‘trials’.
Exercise, holiday and fun do belong in the same sentence when it looks like this….
An empty market place converts to a gym in an instant. Location: Timor-Leste
Where else would you want to do a Barre session. Location: Fiji
Our walking sticks are perfect for lakeside ‘poleates’. Location: The French Alps.
Sandbags are our weights on the beach. Location: Fiji.
Bands are wrapped around palm trees for a row workout or taken to the beach for a stretch session at sunrise. Location: Timor-Leste
SUP paddles come into play. Location: Fiji.
Cores are ‘talking’ when the coconuts get tossed into a plank session. Location: Timor-Leste
We roll our Yoga mats out on a pier jutting out over sparkling blue water. Location: Timor-Leste.
Rice fields, rivers, mountains. No limits. Location: Bali.. where it all began.
When I first talked about launching Bootcamp Bali Style everyone thought I was crazy. Who wants to go on holiday to exercise? Bootcamp + Bali? Are you kidding? Turns out many of us do want to exercise on holiday. Swimming up to the pool bar doesn’t count!
